There are numerous organizations established to protect human rights. Such groups fight for human rights, migrant rights, and civil rights. These groups are found in different regions worldwide. Some of the organizations are; The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, The Advocates for Human Rights and The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is a group located in California. CHIRLA was established after the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986. The act stated that it was unconstitutional to employ undocumented workers. There were several incidences of exploitation and abuse of immigrant workers.
The group was created to eradicate this inhuman act. CHIRLA’S primary concern is to fight for immigrant families. CHIRLA creates awareness of the right of free movement and democracy. The organization aims at creating a society that appreciates everyone. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights intends to change public opinion by changing the existing policy for civil, human and immigrant rights.
ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project is another group that focuses on civil, and migrant rights. The group protects human and civil rights of immigrants through litigation, advocacy, and outreach. In Arizona, there is The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin founded the organization. Michael Lacey and his colleague Jim Larkin are also the co-founders of Phoenix New Times. The source of their $3.75 million settlement fund is from their arrest by Joe Arpaio on October 18, 2007. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey dedicated the money to support groups that fight for rights of migrants.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were jailed because of revealing the existence of the proceedings of the grand jury. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin had spent their entire career defending their first amendment rights. Their arrest resulted to the establishment of the settlement fund. The Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund is aimed at supporting groups that advocate for migrant, civil and human rights throughout Arizona.
